Biography

Dr. Palei is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, with main effort in research. She has mainly made research contributions in the field of preeclampsia. Her initial clinical studies demonstrated that polymorphisms in Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP) genes may affect 1) circulating MMP levels; 2) susceptibility for disease development; and 3) response to anti-hypertensive drugs. Later, she showed that excessive metabolic disturbances are necessary to cause hypertension in pregnant rats. Dr. Palei’s current research is focused on translational studies investigating mechanisms of and therapies for preeclampsia-induced hypercoagulability and heart dysfunction. Her research has been funded by agencies from both Brazil and the USA, including an NIH Research Scientist Development (K01) Award.

She has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles. In addition, she has received several awards including the most recent UMMC Translational Research Team Award, APS-Dale J. Benos Early Career Professional Service Award, and Best Oral Presentation in Basic Science at the ISSHP World Congress. She has served in multiple leadership capacities, including her current appointments as UMMC GWIMS Secretary, APS Water and Electrolytes Section Councilor-at-Large for Translational Research, and IASH Communications Committee Chair. Moreover, she has served as ad-hoc member on grant review panels for the NIH as well as peer-reviewer and guest editor for many international scientific journals.
