Huynh joins CCRI Derm team

Dr. Thy Huynh has joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center as an assistant professor of dermatology and pediatrics.

At UMMC, she will be a member of the Cancer Center and Research Institute Interdisciplinary Skin Cancer Team as well as conduct research in this field.

A native of Montgomery, Ala., she received her doctor of medicine from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and also completed a pediatric preliminary year at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, a clinical research fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Northwestern University/Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and a pediatric dermatology clinical fellowship at Harvard/Boston Children’s Hospital.  She also completed a dermatology residency at UMMC where she was chief resident of research and surgery.

At UMMC, her time will be split between pediatrics and adults, with a focus on inflammatory skin conditions, inherited skin conditions and skin cancer.

“Some medications used to treat cancer can lead to skin rashes and potentially carry  a higher risk of skin cancer development,” she said.

“I hope to bring access to pediatric dermatology and skin checks for cancer patients for things that can be treated or prevented,” she said.

She intends to offer dermatology clinical trials with plans to seek and offer new therapies for skin cancer and other conditions.

“There are new drugs in the pipeline that may help prevent skin cancers in patients who have a higher risk for it,” she said.

Another focus is to establish the foundation to work with CCRI investigators on new therapies and better ways to encourage people to prevent skin cancer.

“I want to collaborate with some scientists doing research on melanoma and targeted therapies,” she said.

“Thy is a superstar, a brilliant physician with a kind heart and pediatric dermatology fellowship unique in the state of Mississippi,” said Dr. Robert Brodell, chair of the Department of Dermatology. “Her work as our clinical trials lead physician for adult and pediatric patients will soon allow us to offer state of the art care for a broad range of the most difficult dermatologist conditions by permitting access to cutting edge experimental medications through clinical trials.”

Outside work, Huynh enjoys spending time with her family, hanging out on the Reservoir, tennis, eating and traveling.
