Welcome from Our Chair

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior
University of Mississippi Medical Center
I am privileged to welcome you to the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Our mission is rooted in excellence in education, research and compassionate patient care. Through these pillars, we strive to advance the understanding and treatment of mental health conditions, supporting individuals and communities across Mississippi and beyond.
Our academic programs are dedicated to preparing the next generation of professionals in psychiatry, psychology and neuroscience. Through innovative curricula, robust residency training and specialized fellowships in areas like child and adolescent psychiatry, sleep medicine and psychology, we are shaping a workforce ready to meet the evolving challenges of mental health care. These programs draw students and professionals from around the world, eager to learn from our esteemed faculty and collaborative environment.
Research is at the heart of our mission, and our department is proud to contribute significantly to the field through integrative studies of biology, behavior, affect and cognition. Supported by local, state and federal funding, our translational psychiatric research addresses critical areas such as addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health conditions.
At the core of our department is our commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. Our care team—comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, therapists and nurse practitioners—provides a comprehensive range of services for individuals of all ages in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We value the humanity of every patient we serve, partnering with them and their families to foster hope and healing during some of life's most challenging moments.
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. We are here to serve, and I encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or needs. Together, we can continue advancing the science and care of mental health for the betterment of all.
Sincerely,
Mark Ladner, MD
