Adult Psychiatry Residency Program

Welcome to the UMMC adult psychiatry residency program. We are the only such program for Mississippi, a state vastly underserved in its mental health care needs.

Dr. HoustonOne of the primary missions of our program is to train competent, caring psychiatrists who will aid in alleviating the shortage of psychiatrists in our state and make a true difference combating health disparities. To this end, we have built and maintain educational affiliations with multiple organizations outside of UMMC in order to provide our residents excellent clinical education with exposure to as many different patient populations as possible. Some examples of these affiliations include our collaboration with the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery VA Center and with Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services Hospital, a nationally recognized addiction treatment facility, but we also have ties to many other local hospitals and healthcare facilities. For a full list of our training sites, visit our Training Sites page.

The mission of UMMC is trifold, including clinical care, education and research, and we are seeking to further our research endeavors through our Office of Medical Student and Resident Research. This office pairs residents interested in research with experienced faculty mentors who can guide them in conducting research and furthering their academic career goals. In the future, we hope to be able to develop the Office of Medical Student and Resident Research into the core of a research track for residents desiring a career as clinician researchers. We are looking for dedicated, motivated applicants to join our program.

Mississippi has a diverse population, and we celebrate that diversity within our department and our residency program, welcoming all qualified applicants. If you are interested in applying to our program, see our Applications page. Thank you for visiting our website. I hope that you will join us and all of UMMC in working to create a healthier Mississippi.
