Clinician Educator Track Description
The Pediatric Clinical Educator Track (pCET) is a two-year longitudinal elective track for residents interested in medical education. It provides a basis for learning the principles of clinical teaching and academic medicine.
The goals of the program include:
- Provide a foundation of basic teaching skills for adult learners
- Learn methods for preparing and delivering didactics in a variety of educational settings
- Learn effective methods of evaluation and feedback, both verbal and written
- Develop skills for creating scholarly work in medical education
Selection for Participation
Applications are available during the spring of each academic year. Categorical Pediatric Residents can apply during their PGY-1 year; Med/Peds residents can apply during their PGY-2 year; and Pediatric Neurology residents can apply during their PGY-3 year. Applications require a statement of interest, personal goals, and an updated CV. Resident selection is made by the pCET faculty with final approval by each resident's respective program director.
Course Objectives
- Develop foundational teaching skills for Pediatric Clinical Educators
- Learn effective methods for teaching across various clinical settings and learning environments
- Acquire and apply best practices in learner evaluation and feedback
- Utilize tools and strategies to critically analyze, design, and produce educational scholarly activity
Schedule and Teaching Activities
First- and second-year pCET residents will:- Serve as Preceptors for M1's and M2's as part of the Introduction to the Medical Profession (IMP) course, teaching history and physical exam skills
- Assist with teaching M1 and M2 IMP small group sessions
- Lead small group case-based discussions for M3's during their pediatric clerkship
- Give Pediatric Review Lecture to M3's at the end of their pediatric clerkship
- Attend lectures and didactics each block by pCET Faculty
- Complete at least 12 hours of lectures/teaching per year
- Year 1 pCET Residents will:
- Participate in the Stanford Medical Educator’s course in June (during CET elective block) with the Medicine CET residents during M3 Bootcamp. The course is divided into ~ 6 sessions that focus on teaching clinical education, leadership, and careers in academic medicine.
- Assist in teaching and lectures for the M3 Bootcamp-Transition to Clinical Medicine course in June
- Year 2 pCET Residents will:
- Assist in teaching and lecturing the M4 Bootcamp-Transition to Residency course in March.
- Assist in teaching at Pediatric M4 interest lunches
- Lead Pediatric didactics (Noon conference, Sign-ins, Board Review)
- Create their Teaching Philosophy and complete a CV and Educational Portfolio
Didactics
- Teaching methods for this course are varied, including traditional large-group didactic sessions, small group interactive sessions, and one-on-one evaluations with feedback.
