The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship includes the full scope of clinical and research features to fulfill the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology requirements for fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine.
Our MFM division is supported by faculty with extensive expertise that encompasses the full spectrum of clinical disease encountered in the pregnant patient. As the only Level 4 referral perinatal center in the state, we receive many obstetric patients with challenging complications affecting patients during the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods. Our alliances with the departments of Newborn Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Genetics, Radiology and Anesthesia enhance the already exceptional educational opportunities provided to our MFM fellows. Our 6 floor hospital, which is solely dedicated to the care of women and infants, manages around 3,000 deliveries each year of which 75% are considered high risk, 20,000 high risk visits, 5000 level II ultrasounds including fetal echocardiography and 300 invasive perinatal procedures.
In addition to strong participation and productivity in clinical research, we have a very strong basic science foundation through our collaboration with several departments in the medical school, especially physiology and pharmacology. Primary areas of basic research include hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, prematurity and maternal-fetal physiology. The research aspect of the fellowship includes excellent research support from a dedicated Research & Academic Affairs Division within our Department of OB-GYN. Presently we are involved in multiple funded clinical projects that will contribute to more reliable and efficient prediction, detection and management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in addition to improving therapeutic decision making that will positively impact perinatal outcomes.
