UMMC Madison

Exterior photo of UMMC MadisonThe residency program offers an unopposed inpatient service and educational experience through an affiliation with UMMC Madison for inpatient delivery of care and education. The program operates an inpatient service of continuity and unreferred ED patients. The goal of the service is to maintain a service of 15 patients minimum to accommodate the RRC-FM requirements for residency training.

One faculty provides hospital team leading for the resident and student team on a rotating basis. While team leading, this faculty is onsite 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and exempt from other clinical duties. Coverage of the service on nights, weekends and holidays is by the on-call faculty. Faculty have ICU and CCU admission privileges so residents manage their own patients in these settings.

Family Medicine Residency: Rural Hospital Experience

Our family medicine residents gain hands-on experience in high-acuity care while serving in a rural community-based hospital. This unique training environment offers exposure to emergency medicine, inpatient care, and rural health challenges, fostering clinical independence and adaptability. Residents actively participate in the stabilization and management of critically ill patients, perform essential procedures such as intubation and central line placement, and utilize point-of-care ultrasound in real-time decision-making.

Working alongside a dedicated interdisciplinary team, residents develop a deep understanding of continuity of care and the complexities of practicing in resource-limited settings. This rotation equips them with the skills and confidence to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care in both rural and urban communities.
