Women in Emergency Medicine: A Year in Review
The Women in Emergency Medicine (WEM) group celebrated another successful year marked by empowerment, education, and community-building. From wellness-focused events to professional development, WEM continued to champion the advancement and support of women in emergency medicine.

This year’s programming featured a mix of engaging activities aimed at promoting both personal and professional growth. In July, participants took part in a self-defense class, emphasizing personal safety and confidence both inside and outside the hospital setting. Members kicked off the spring with a revitalizing Yoga in the Park session, encouraging physical well-being and stress relief amid busy clinical schedules. The group also hosted a Mexican Food and a Movie Night, bringing members together to enjoy food, film, and fellowship.
One of the group’s key initiatives, the WEM Lecture Series, continued as part of the department’s regular conference schedule. These talks provided a platform for women physicians to share expertise, highlight research, and discuss the challenges and triumphs unique to women in the field of emergency medicine.
As the academic year closes, WEM bids a warm farewell to its outgoing co-chairs, Dr. Heather Deville and Dr. Amanda Huffman, whose leadership and dedication have greatly shaped the group’s success. Stepping into their roles are Dr. Lauren Hopper and Dr. Megan McLin, who bring fresh vision and energy to guide the group into the coming year.
UMMC’s Women in Emergency Medicine group looks forward to continuing its mission of support, advocacy, and leadership development for women across all levels of training and practice in emergency medicine.
