The Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to educating future anesthesiologists and health care providers in Mississippi and across the nation. The department's ACGME-accredited training programs for physicians are designed to create qualified and highly competent expert consultants in anesthesiology and pain medicine.
The department’s goals are threefold:
The Department of Anesthesiology offers a four-year residency training program and is approved for 38 residencies. It is designed as a competency-based program with a systematic progression of key learning goals and milestones. The program is committed to educating anesthesiology residents who are knowledgeable in the science of anesthesia, skilled in their craft, and able to serve as expert consultants in the field of perioperative medicine.
Searching for the right residency is often a true archeologic expedition. What is the best residency “fit” for me? At UMMC, we offer a broad range of clinical cases. Heart, kidney and liver transplantation is common, alongside of high risk obstetrical care. Our team is heavily involved in cardiac care - in the cath lab and the OR. Our Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) rotation allows the resident to learn about complex care in the immediate post-operative environment. Clinically, our residency is very strong and allows graduating residents to feel confident in their skills as they go out into practice.
The Department of Anesthesiology's Grand Rounds are held each Wednesday for the benefit of students, trainees and faculty.
Once a month, a guest speaker addresses the group to help the audience stay current with important, evolving areas of medicine. These engaging lectures are presented by thought leaders in their respective medical fields. In-house residents alternate on the remaining Wednesdays to present interesting cases, new research and special interest topics.
