New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Buck Covington

Dr. Buck Covington, a program administrator for the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of preventive medicine in the School of Medicine.  

A certified clinical exercise physiologist and a certified cancer exercise specialist, Covington earned the Master of Science in applied exercise physiology from Mississippi College in Clinton before completing his PhD in exercise physiology in 2025 at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. 

He has also held positions in the University of Northern Colorado Department of Sport and Exercise Science and at the UNC Cancer and Rehabilitation Institute.  

Covington, who served for several years as a lecturer or lab instructor at UNC, has a number of scientific presentations and publications to his credit. 

At UMMC, under the direction of the CCRI, he will be building a cancer rehabilitation program in the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic as a part of the Lifestyle Medicine Cancer Care program, using as a model the program at the UNC Cancer and Rehabilitation Institute.

Dr. Katelyn M. Rossow

Dr. Katelyn M. Rossow, recently an assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Developmental Medicine at the University of Louisville, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics in Child Development and Behavioral Health in the School of Medicine. 

Rossow earned her medical degree in 2014 from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She completed her general pediatric residency at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis, Indiana. In Nashville, she completed a clinical pharmacology fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, a developmental and behavioral pediatrics fellowship at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and a Master of Public Health at Vanderbilt University. She also served as an instructor of pediatrics in the Division of Developmental Medicine at Vanderbilt. 

Rossow, who has earned a number of academic, teaching, clinical and research honors, has participated in a variety of peer-reviewed oral, abstract and poster presentations. She is the co-author of several professional publications in refereed journals. 

A member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, and American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Rossow has an extensive record of volunteer and committee service.

Dr. Rubina Sharma

Dr. Rubina Sharma, recently a neuroanesthesiology fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine. 

Sharma, who has been recognized for her academic achievements, earned the MBBS degree in 2019 from Government Medical College in Patiala, India, and then completed her anesthesiology residency at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. 

Before joining the Cleveland Clinic, she served as an anesthesiology junior attending physician at Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, and then as an anesthesiology attending physician at Community Health Center in Jalalabad-West, India. 

Sharma, who has several published, peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts to her credit, is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care, Indian Society of Anesthesiologists, and Indian Medical Council.
