New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Julie N. Bonom

Dr. Julie N. Bonom, recently a clinical professor and program director for the Nurse Anesthesia Concentration at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, has joined the Medical Center faculty as professor of nursing in the School of Nursing.  

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, she received her Master of Science in Nursing-Nurse Anesthesia at UT in Knoxville before earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2012 at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. 

She served on the faculty of UT for approximately 17 years. Previously, she was a staff CRNA at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville and a staff RN in surgical intensive care at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee. She is a co-owner of Bonom Anesthesia, a practice specializing in office-based anesthesia services. 

Throughout her career, Bonom has received a number of nurse anesthetist traineeship grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration. She has made a variety of scientific presentations at national and statewide professional conferences and meetings, in addition to other scholarly activities, including those related to educational program accreditation. 

Her professional activities include service on the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists. 

Among her many scholarly and professional honors and awards is the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists Patty Cornwell Practitioner of the Year Award.

Allison Harris

Allison Harris, recently a staff occupational therapist at Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson for the last 11-plus years, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of occupational therapy in the School of Health Related Professions.  

She holds a Master’s in Occupational Therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with a minor in psychology from Texas Tech University.  

Her clinical expertise includes the treatment of individuals with stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and Parkinson’s disease, with an emphasis on supporting patients as they transition back into their daily lives and communities.  

She is a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist, conducting driving evaluations, training, and making adaptive equipment recommendations to promote safe driving for individuals with physical or cognitive impairments. 

Her other areas of specialization include the use of advanced therapeutic techniques and tools such as Interactive Metronome, Bioness H200, Kinesiotaping, Graston Technique, LSVT BIG and visual rehabilitation.

Casey Peeples

Casey Peeples, recently a member of the Associate Degree nursing faculty at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of nursing in the School of Nursing.  

Peeples received her BSN from Mississippi University for Women before earning her Master of Science in Nursing Teaching and Learning in 2022 at the University of North Alabama in Florence. 

She has also served as a clinical nurse educator-labor and delivery/OB Emergency Department at North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital in Tupelo, and as a graduate nurse preceptee at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.  

At NMMC Women’s Hospital, she also worked as a case manager, as a member of the COVID Cohort Unit, and as a clinical RN in labor and delivery. Before that, she was a clinical nurse extern at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.
