New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Sandeep Kumar

Dr. Sandeep Kumar, who recently completed a gastrointestinal and liver pathology fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pathology in the School of Medicine.  

Kumar, who is board-certified in pathology, earned a medical degree at Chandka Medical College in Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan, graduating with distinction and earning the Gold Medal Award for exceptional performance.  

After moving to the United States, he undertook pathology observerships at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island. 

He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Beaumont Health (now Corewell Health) in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he also served as chief resident and contributed to the education of medical students at Oakland University in Michigan. After residency, he completed fellowships in oncologic surgical pathology and gastrointestinal liver pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. 

Throughout his training, he received several accolades, including the USCAP Pathologist Trainee Award, the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society Best Abstract Award, the Pakistani American Pathologists' Society Research Excellence Award, and an honorable mention for the Best Abstract from the Association of Indian Pathologists in North America. He has also authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, scientific abstracts and poster presentations. 

He has presented as a speaker at various state-level pathology society meetings and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, College of American Pathologists and American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Lucette “Teel” Liddell

Dr. Lucette “Teel” Liddell, recently a dermatology resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of dermatology in the School of Medicine. 

Liddell, who earned her MD in 2016 at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, completed an internship year in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and her second year of residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center before completing her dermatology training at UMMC. 

The coauthor of a dozen scientific publications, she gained post-graduate research experience at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.  

Liddell’s work experience includes a stint in the Department of Health, in the Health Inequalities Unit, in London, England.  

Her academic interests include medical and surgical dermatology, resident and medical student education and physician wellness. In her free time, she loves spending time with her son and is actively involved with First Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Tyler R. Shack

Dr. Tyler R. Shack, recently a pediatric anesthesiology fellow at Emory University in Atlanta, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine.  

Shack earned his medical degree at the UMMC School of Medicine in 2019. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at UMMC before taking on his fellowship at Emory. 

The recipient of several awards and honors as a student and resident, Shack was also involved in a number of community service and leadership activities, including the Jackson Free Clinic and the Black Representation in Medicine program. 

He has research presentations to his credit and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
