New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. Unsa Shafi Arain
Dr. Unsa Shafi Arain, recently an emergency medical services fellow at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of emergency medicine in the School of Medicine.
She earned her medical degree in 2020 at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis before undertaking her emergency medicine residency at UMMC, serving as chief resident.
Arain is the winner of several awards and honors for scholarship and research as a student and resident, including the Emergency Medicine Residency Spirit Award. She is a member of a variety or professional organizations, including the National Association of EMS Physicians and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Scott M. Kleinpeter
Dr. Scott M. Kleinpeter, recently a diagnostic radiology chief resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as instructor of radiology in the School of Medicine.
Kleinpeter, who graduated from Tulane University in 2013 with a degree in biomedical engineering, received his medical degree in 2019 from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans before completing an internal medicine internship at UMMC.
His professional experience includes work as a mechanical engineer and as the manager of a medical device company he co-founded in 2013.
Kleinpeter is the coauthor of several scientific publications and has applied for three U.S. patents. The recipient of a number of honors and awards in technology, business and academics, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in spring 2023, he has a record of leadership, mentorship and community service.
Kleinpeter is a member of the Radiological Society of North America, Mississippi Radiological Society, American College of Radiology and Association of Academic Radiology (formerly the Association of University Radiologists).

Dr. Shanu Moorthy
Dr. Shanu Moorthy, recently an internal medicine-pediatrics resident at Prisma Health-Upstate/University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics/pediatric chief resident in the School of Medicine.
Moorthy, who filled a variety of leadership and mentorship roles as a resident and medical student, participated in quality improvement projects as well. She was a Mississippi State Medical Association Student Advocacy Training Program Scholar.
As a researcher, Moorthy has participated in numerous regional and statewide scientific presentations.
