New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Aly M. Fayed

Dr. Aly M. Fayed, recently a foot and ankle fellow in the Orthopaedic Surgery Department of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of orthopaedic surgery in the School of Medicine. 

Fayed, who earned a number of academic honors and awards, received the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery degree in 2013 from Tanta University Faculty of Medicine in Tanta, Egypt, where he also earned a Master’s degree in orthopaedic surgery. 

He also completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Tanta University before serving as an assistant lecturer of orthopaedic surgery. For two years, he was a visiting research scholar at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. 

He has a number of scientific poster and podium presentations to his credit and has coauthored various peer-reviewed research publications. He has made several oral presentations and is the author or coauthor of three published books or book chapters. 

Fayed, who has served as a reviewer for the orthopaedic surgery section of the Frontiers in Surgery journal and the BioMed Central journal, is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the International Bone Research Association, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Egyptian Orthopaedic Association and more. He was recently selected to serve as a member of an AOFAS committee on health outcomes, registries and data.  

His volunteer and community activities include participation in organized medical campaigns in underserved areas.

Deanna K. Howington

Deanna Howington

Deanna K. Howington, recently director of quality management at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of nursing in the School of Nursing.  

She earned her Master of Science in Nursing and Health Care Administration in 2021 at UMMC after working for 24 years at King’s Daughters Medical Center as, successively, an ER staff nurse; labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum staff nurse; clinic informatics specialist; and, again, LDRP staff nurse. She has more than 26 years of experience as an RN. 

Throughout her career, she has served in a number leadership roles, participating in performance improvement projects while earning academic, clinical and research awards and honors as well.  

Howington, who is a member of the Mississippi Nurses Association and the National Association for Healthcare Quality, has earned the Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality credential.

Dr. Annilin Severns

Severns

Dr. Annilin Severns has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine.  

She earned her medical degree in 2018 at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. At UMMC, she completed her residency in anesthesiology, serving as chief resident, and her cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship.  

At UMMC and the University of Louisville School of Medicine, she participated in several research, quality improvement and community assessment projects. She has taken on a variety of leadership roles in academics, as a mentor and within the community.  

She is a member of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, American Board of Anesthesiology and Mississippi State Medical Association.
