New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Dr. Syed H. Abbas, recently a cytopathology fellow at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pathology in the School of Medicine

Abbas received his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in 2012 from Khyber Medical College, Khyber Medical University in Peshawar, Pakistan. In Peshawar, he also did an internship in various disciplines of general surgery and general medicine at Khyber Teaching Hospital. Abbas completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Rutgers Health at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey and is certified by the America Board of Pathology.

Abbas has extensive experience in research and has co-authored more than two dozen peer-reviewed publications. In March, during the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) meeting in Los Angeles, he received a first-place research award for his abstract on telecytology at remote sites with a portable digital microscope and slide scanner.

Abbas, who has vast experience in teaching, has presented as a speaker in a national conference and has taught residents, medical students, and cytotechnologists. He earned several teaching awards at Rutgers, including Outstanding Teaching Resident and Outstanding Clinical Pathology Resident, as well as Trainee of the Year Award.

Abbas is a member of several professional organizations, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, College of American Pathologists, New Jersey Society of Pathologists and the Pakistani-American Pathologists Society.

Dr. Satyapal Chahar

Dr. Satyapal Chahar, recently a gastrointestinal pathology fellow at the University of Miami/Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pathology in the School of Medicine.

Chahar earned his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) at Sardar Patel Medical College in Bikaner, Rajasthan, India, in 2010 before embarking on his clinical internship at PBM Hospital/S.P. Medical College in Bikaner.

In Rajasthan, he has served also as a physician for NICE Foundation and as medical officer for the Government Primary Health Care Center. He was a research fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts before his pathology residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, and his oncologic surgical pathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

He is a member of such honorary or professional societies as the American Society of Clinical Pathology, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and College of American Pathologists.

Chahar is the co-author of several professional publications and has been the co-presenter of more than a dozen case reports/abstracts at professional conferences.
