Emergency medicine nurse practitioner joins UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following addition to its faculty and leadership staff.

Dr. Derek Holt, a seasoned nurse practitioner in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of nursing and director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Track.

A graduate of Vero Beach (Florida) High School, Holt received his BSN cum laude in 2003 from Alcorn State University, where he was named Undergraduate of the Year in 2001. He began his career as a registered nurse in a wide variety of medical/surgical specialties at UMMC in 2003 and earned his MSN and postgraduate certificate with highest distinction at Alcorn State in 2006. That year, he began managing and providing client medical care at the Comprehensive Health Services Occupational Health Clinic.

In 2008, he returned to UMMC to serve as a nurse practitioner in the Department of Emergency Medicine and as a clinical preceptor for students in the School of Nursing. While at UMMC, he became lead nurse practitioner and also served as a nurse practitioner telemergency/hospitalist at Jefferson County Hospital. Holt obtained his DNP from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with superior academic performance in 2012. He also has experience as a legal nurse consultant and a content expert panelist for emergency nurse practitioner certification.

An active member of several professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Holt has given six invited presentations at scientific meetings throughout the Southeast.
