Health information admin, coding specialist joins SHRP faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following addition to its faculty and leadership staff.

Jermeika D. Burks, a registered health information administrator, certified coding specialist, certified professional coder and certified professional medical auditor, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of health informatics and information management in the School of Health Related Professions.

After obtaining prerequisite credits for health information management at Jackson State University from 2001-03, Burks earned her BS in health information management magna cum laude in 2005 at UMMC, where she received the Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship and the Health Information Management Clinical Education Award. She served as a certified outpatient coding specialist at UMMC from 2005-06 and as assistant director of health information management at Central Mississippi Medical Center from 2006-07.

Burks returned to academia, serving as an instructor in medical billing and coding at Hinds Community College, Jackson, from 2007-15, while earning her MS in higher education administration from Mississippi College in 2010. She received the Hinds Community College “Hinds Hero Award” in 2012. Burks joined St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in 2015 as inpatient coding supervisor. She has served as lead coding consultant for outpatient services at Stonybrook University Hospital, Long Island, New York, since 2016.

An inductee of the Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Eta Honor Societies, Burks has given various presentations or lectures locally and nationally. An affiliate of the Phi Beta Lambda Business Society, AHIMA and AAPC, among other professional organizations, she has served on numerous institutional committees and advisory boards for Hinds Community College, Virginia College, Antonelli College and UMMC.
