Peds chief resident, intern join Medical Center faculty
Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Lauren Munk, M.D.
Dr. Lauren Munk, chief resident in the Department of Pediatrics at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.
After receiving her B.S. in biology from Texas A&M University, College Station, in 2012, Munk earned her M.D. at the American University of the Caribbean, Cupecoy, St. Maarten, in 2016. She then had residency training in pediatrics at UMMC from 2017-20 and became chief resident in pediatrics this year.
An active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the School of Medicine’s Resident Recruitment Committee, Munk has served as secretary of the American Medical Student Association. She is the author of a scientific poster, “Mycoplasma Induced Rash and Mucositis in the Teenage Patient,” presented at the Southern Regional Meeting in 2019.
Kathryn Janeanna Shell, M.D.
Dr. Kathryn Janeanna Shell, recently a pediatrics intern and resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.
After receiving her B.A. in biological science cum laude in 2013 from the University of Mississippi, where she was a Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College graduate, Shell earned her M.D. in 2017 at UMMC, where she had pediatrics internship and residency training from 2017-20.
An active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and former president of the Pediatric Interest Group, Shell is the coauthor of two articles published in peer-reviewed journals and four research posters presented at scientific meetings nationally. A 2019 recipient of the All-Star Award and of the Resident Teaching Award, she is a Gold Humanism Honor Society inductee.
