The Medical Center is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. Brian E. Kogon, chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Emory University/Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of medicine and chief of pediatric and congenital heart surgery.
After receiving his BS in zoology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1991, Kogon earned his MD at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1995. He had a surgery internship, a surgery residency and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship from 1995-2003 at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, and a pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship from 2003-04 at Emory.
He joined the Emory faculty in 2004 as an assistant professor of surgery and became surgical director of Emory's Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program the following year. He became an associate professor of surgery in 2011 and an associate professor of pediatrics in 2012. In 2013, he was named chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.
An active member of several professional societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, Kogon has given 26 invited presentations or lectures nationally. The author or coauthor of more than 120 articles in peer-reviewed publications, three books and book chapters and more than 30 abstracts and poster presentations, Kogon has served as a manuscript reviewer for six professional journals.
Dr. Erin Bassford Taylor, recently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Physiology at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in physiology and biophysics.
After receiving her BS in biochemistry and molecular biology from Mississippi State University in 2004, Taylor earned her M.S. in biochemistry and molecular biology at MSU in 2006. She earned her Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology at UMMC in 2015 and began her postdoctoral research fellowship.
An active member of the American Physiological Society, the American Heart Association and the American Association of Immunologists, among other professional organizations, Taylor is the author of coauthor of 13 articles in peer-reviewed publications and more than 20 abstracts.
