Journal club to ponder mental disorder mortality

Dr. Joshua Mann, professor and chair of preventive medicine and professor of medicine, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club session, “Mortality in Mental Disorders and Global Disease Burden Implications: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis,” scheduled from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, in room 308 of the Classroom Wing.
All Medical Center faculty, staff, and students are invited. The journal club is sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities.

Pathology chair candidate to navigate cardiac cytoskeleton

Dr. Richard Vander Heide, Jack Perry Strong Professor of Pathology and chair of pathology at Louisiana State University Medical School, New Orleans, and candidate for chair of pathology, will present “The Ins and Outs of the Cardiac Cytoskeleton” from noon-12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

St. Louis assoc. dean to give GWIMS lecture on leadership

Dr. Angela Sharkey, professor of pediatrics and associate dean for faculty affairs and professional development at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, will give the UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science seminar series presentation, "In Order to Lean In, You Have to Be at the Table," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in second-floor conference rooms A and B of the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

Guyton professor to sort sex differences in BP control

Dr. Jane Reckelhoff, Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor and Chair of Biochemistry, director of the Women's Health Research Center in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and director of research development in the Office of Research, will give the Physiology Seminar Series presentation, “Sex Differences in Blood Pressure Control,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Starkville pastor to discuss body, soul physician

Father Lenin Vargas, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Starkville and a former emergency medicine physician, will present “Physician of the Body, Physician of the Soul” at noon on Thursday, Dec. 1, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Emory ophthalmology expert to discuss modern times

Dr. Valerie Biousse, professor of neurology and ophthalmology at the Emory University School of Medicine, will deliver the Departments of Neurology and Ophthalmology James J. Corbett, M.D. Lectureship, “Ophthalmology in the 21st Century,” from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, in room 1B of the School of Health Related Professions building.

Three UMMC staff ADDS up for development seminar
Dr. Terry Pollard, assistant professor of health sciences in the School of Health Related Professions, Dr. Christian Pruett, assistant professor of nursing, and Heidi Shoemake, senior information technology program manager in the Division of Information Systems, will give the Academic Development and Discovery Seminar (ADDS), “Effectively Integrating Technology into the Classroom Experience: Lessons Learned from the Quality Matter Implementation,” at noon on Thursday, Dec. 8, in room 1B in the School of Health Related Professions building.

JHS chief science officer candidate to give presentation

Dr. Mario Sims, associate professor of medicine, associate director of research training for the Jackson Heart Study and chief science officer candidate for the JHS, will present "Social and Psychological Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease among African-Americans," from 4-5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, in the Rowan Oak Conference Room of the Jackson Medical Mall Conference Center.
