Veteran pathologist, staff nurse join UMMC faculty

The Medical Center is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Marlie Lawrence, BSN

Marlie Lawrence, a staff nurse at UMMC for five years, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in nursing.

After receiving her BSN magna cum laude from Mississippi College in 2011, Lawence joined UMMC as a staff nurse in the Adult Oncology Unit. The following year, she became a staff nurse in the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Batson Children's Hospital. She is expected to receive her MSN from UMMC in December.

Nominated for several DAISY awards at the Medical Center, Lawrence is a member of the Omicron Lambda Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Mississippi Nurses Association and the Mississippi chapter of the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses. She has coauthored a pair of poster presentations at the Medical Center and has participated in medical mission trips to the Amazon region of South America.

Dr. Ali G. Saad, director of anatomic pathology, director of neuropathology and director of pediatric pathology at Baptist Health Medical Center and Wolfson Children's Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of pathology.

Saad earned his M.D. at The Lebanese University Faculty of Medical Sciences, Beirut, Lebanon, in 1996. He had a surgery internship from 1997-98 and an anatomic pathology residency from 1998-2000 at the American University of Beirut. Saad was a resident in anatomic and clinical pathology from 2000-05 at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and had fellowships in pathology in the combined neuropathology program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and at Children's Hospital from 2005-06; in pediatric pathology at Children's Hospital Boston from 2006-07; and in pathology in the combined neuropathology program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and at Children's Hospital from 2007-08 at Harvard Medical School.

In 2008, Saad joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children's Hospital faculty as an assistant professor of pathology and director of gastrointestinal pathology. The following year, he became director of surgical pathology and director of anatomic pathology. He was interim pathologist-in-chief at Arkansas Children's Hospital before moving to Saskatoon Health Region in Canada. In 2015, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, to join Baptist Health Medical Center and Wolfson Children's Hospital.

The author or coauthor of 42 articles in peer-reviewed scientific publications and one book chapter, Saad has given seven platform and 48 poster presentations and seven invited lectures internationally. A fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, he is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Gastro-Intestinal Pathology Society, the American Association of Neuropathologists and the Society of Pediatric Pathology.

Saad's areas of interest include oncologic surgical pathology, pediatric gastrointestinal disorders, hepatobiliary disorders and adult and pediatric neuropathology.
