Our residency programs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center are among the strongest in the nation. This stems from several factors, including a diverse patient population, a heavy emphasis on effective teaching rounds, a focus on the appropriate balance between supervision and autonomy, and consistent attention to appropriate feedback and evaluations. Our general medicine and hospitalist divisions have numerous faculty members with strong educational backgrounds, and we have robust fellowship training programs in every major subspecialty.
We maintain a consistently innovative approach to education that has allowed us to adapt well to changes in duty hours and to the ever-changing demands that face young physicians both professionally and personally. Additionally, over the past several years, we have established a consistent presence at several regional and national educational and scientific meetings, as our residents have been increasingly active in the areas of scholarship, research and quality improvement.
Each resident in our program graduates with a set of skills that gives him or her a wide variety of career opportunities, whether that be in general medicine or in a subspecialty, in an academic or a private practice setting. We value the feedback our alumni provide on their preparation to be an independent physician, and we use this to make effective change in the program.
