The Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) program was established at UMMC in December 2000. Since UMMC is the only academic health science campus in Mississippi, its GIS/RS program is unique - not duplicating, but complementing GIS/RS-related activities of health studies at other universities across the state.
Availability of required software through the state license program greatly influenced the decision to establish this program. It became the first GIS and remote sensing program on an academic medical center in the country, and has been recognized nationally and internationally for its activities in the area of geospatial health.
