Biography: Gabriel Hernandez finished his medical school at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. He then completed one year of postgraduate research fellowship at Vanderbilt University’s Autonomic Dysfunction Center followed by internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship training at the University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital. Following his cardiology training, he completed a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at Vanderbilt University and Interventional Cardiology back at the University of Miami. During his training, he was inducted to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical society, and served as chief fellow. He is board certified in Internal medicine, cardiology, nuclear cardiology, advanced heart failure, transplant cardiology along with interventional cardiology.
He joined the division of cardiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in September of 2019, where he found himself in a unique position to help grow UMMC’s cardiogenic shock and temporary mechanical circulatory support program, co-direct the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and to established the first in-state pulmonary embolism response team, which he also co-directs. He currently serves as the associate program director for the general cardiology fellowship program and as principal investigator for multiple landmark studies in the fields of pulmonary embolism and acute heart failure.
