Schneider, Kathryn E., M.D.

Specialties: Children's Hospital Medicine

Gender: Female

Biography: Though born in Nashville, TN, Dr. Schneider considers Jackson, MS her hometown. Following her dream of becoming a marine biologist, she attended the College of Charleston in South Carolina as a marine biology major. After graduation, she fulfilled that dream and worked for NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) for 2 years, a job she loved but soon realized her true passion was in patient care. She attended medical school at UMMC, and chose to stay at UMMC for her pediatric residency training for the vast clinical experiences, the excellent teaching and mentoring, and the family feel of the program. After completing her residency in 2009, she joined the faculty in the department of Pediatrics as a chief resident and then as a Pediatric Hospitalist in 2010. She became the Associate Program Director 6 months later, and her favorite things about the program are still the patients and the people. In 2020, she became the Assistant Dean in the Office of Admissions for the School of Medicine. Over the years, she has learned that teaching and mentoring are roles she loves just as passionately as her role caring for pediatric patients.

Her proudest achievements are her two children, and spending time with family is her favorite past time. She loves running before the sun comes up or on a trail through the woods, but can also found swimming laps, playing tennis, hiking, and just enjoying the outdoors. She is a seasoned ultramarathoner, a “hobby” she loves for the physical and mental challenges they bring and the people she meets along the way. Her life motto is “Work hard (and be nice), play hard, rest, repeat.” She hopes to one day return to her first love, the ocean, and spend her days sitting on the beach with a good book and a great view.
