Biography: Philip Merideth, M.D., J.D., serves as the program director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship program and is board-certified in adult, child/adolescent and forensic psychiatry. He is a native of Greenville, Mississippi and received his B.A. degree in English cum laude from the University of Mississippi in 1982. Merideth earned his M.D. degree in 1987 at UMMC, after which he then undertook two years of a pathology residency. Merideth earned his J.D. degree cum laude at the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1991, then returned to UMMC for a psychiatry residency from 1991 to 1994. He served as a chief resident in the Yale University Department of Psychiatry, Yale-New Haven Partial Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, from 1994 to 1995 and was a child/adolescent psychiatry fellow at the Yale Child Study Center from 1995 to 1997. He completed a forensic psychiatry fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio from 1997 to 1998. He served as a member of the Ethics Committee of the American Psychiatric Association from 1998 to 2008. He was appointed to the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure from 2003 to 2014 and served as the president of the board from 2007 to 2009. After many years in private practice, he joined the faculty at UMMC in 2016 to help establish and co-direct the Student Counseling and Wellness Center, a position that he still holds. He also served as the director of the Division of Child Psychiatry from 2016 to 2019 and as an adjunct professor at the Mississippi College School of law, teaching classes on topics at the interface of law, medicine, ethics, and mental health. Since 2018, he has served as the Medical Director for a federal grant that established a pediatric mental health care access team known as "CHAMP" (Child Access to Mental Health and Psychiatry). The author or coauthor of over 37 articles in professional publications, he has been the Associate Editor of the Journal of the Mississippi State Medical Association and has given more than 62 invited presentations and 32 peer-reviewed, national or international presentations. Outside of the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his family and swimming.
