J. Wallis Marsh, M.D., was born and raised in South Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville for his undergraduate studies and then the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock for medical school. Dr. Marsh completed a 5-year surgical residency at St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas, TX (now part of UT Southwestern) before his program director convinced him to focus on transplantation. Dr. Marsh then completed a one-year fellowship in renal transplantation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and a one-year fellowship in liver transplantation at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh (PITT). Dr. Marsh remained on staff for another 2.5 years before spending 3.5 years at Washington University in St. Louis. Before becoming the chair of the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University in 2017, Dr. Marsh worked with Dr. Starzl at PITT. Dr. Marsh's primary research interest was using genetic alterations to predict the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma following liver transplantation.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. J. Wallis Marsh as he presents the eighteenth James D. Hardy lecture.
