Pioneers in pediatric care, a groundbreaker in gastroenterology, stalwart surgeons, prototypes in public health, accomplished figures in family medicine, and others accepted awards, applause and medals during the 2022 UMMC Medical Alumni Awards Dinner. Eight outstanding School of Medicine alumni and/or former faculty members were in the limelight, sharing it with an accomplished contingent from the Class of 1972.

It’s not an unusual scenario: A rural Mississippi mom goes into labor at home. She’s bleeding and her baby is at just 26 weeks. Emergency responders with no training in OB-GYN emergencies arrive to a scene where both mom and baby are in peril. That’s one reason why a Medical Center team is training rural EMS and emergency medicine providers on how to recognize danger signs and stabilize patients until they can receive a higher level of care.

The UMMC Center for Telehealth and School of Nursing are working together to provide health care to more students in the state’s kindergarten-12th grade schools. The outreach, funded by a $17.6 million grant from the Mississippi Department of Education, will begin in Pearl, Yazoo County, Quitman and McComb school districts this week. Thirty more school districts will gain those services by Nov. 1.

A rare bacterium has been discovered on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and experts at the University of Mississippi Medical Center say people who are immunocompromised or have chronic diseases should protect themselves from infection by avoiding soil and muddy water where the organism lurks.
