#UMMCGrad2023

Good commencement morning!

Today is a day like no other for our graduates. When they receive their diploma from one of the Medical Center’s six schools, it’s a milestone, a first or additional step along the journey as a health science professional.

It’s a time for these new or advancing professionals to realize their purpose. It’s exciting!

I’d like to offer my congratulations to both our learners and the faculty behind the successes of the Class of 2023. They’ve positioned the 900-plus graduates to use what they’ve learned in their new careers, be that practicing, researching or teaching.

For those in the Class of 2023 who will embark on their careers or residencies in Mississippi, thank you. You are appreciated, and you are instrumental in increasing access to quality care. And, a request for those who are leaving the state: Come back. We need you.

Each year, when I’m standing on the stage and looking out at the graduates and crowd, I’m reminded why commencement Friday is one of my favorite days. I’m honored to be the leader of the state’s sole academic medical center, the producer of the largest number of health professionals in the state. I see the family, friends and classmates who supported our graduates in their journey.

Class of 2023, you made it! Beginning today, you bring your passion for patients and love for learning full circle, and we all look forward to you being a partner in working toward our goal of A Healthier Mississippi.
