"In Pursuit of Excellence"

UMMC has always been a place where challenges are met and overcome.

Students are challenged through rigorous learning experiences. Faculty and staff are challenged in educating Mississippi’s future health care workforce and supporting the invaluable work of the Medical Center. Caregivers are challenged to provide top-level service to those in our hospitals and clinics, and scientists are challenged to discover tomorrow’s treatments and cures and translate them to practical use.

As I continue to think about the last year, I see all the ways the Medical Center has made progress in our mission. January often serves as a time to look forward to an exciting new year, but it is also a time to look back at what was accomplished in the previous one. One of the ways we reflect on past successes as an institution is through our annual report.

VC_NOtes_Annual_Report_21_22The 2021-22 annual report, “In Pursuit of Excellence,” captures the many accolades and milestones that marked the last fiscal year for the Medical Center. Highlights of the past year are organized by our three-part mission: education, research and health care. It includes interesting facts about UMMC, information on Year 2 of the UMMC Strategic Plan, community service outreach, diversity, equity and inclusion work and financial data. It’s impossible to detail all the ways you contribute to the success of the Medical Center but we hope you see just how much we have to celebrate.

You will notice when reviewing the report (and I encourage you to do that) an emphasis on photography of our patients, students, faculty and staff who are integral to what we do each day. The strength of UMMC is its people. I am inspired by your commitment to excellence and your dedicated service to your fellow Mississippians. This report is a reminder of outstanding individual and collective achievements that we can build upon this year.

The accomplishments include

  • Completing the 3,000th transplant
  • Exceeding the Children’s of Mississippi $100 million campaign goal
  • Increasing the number of research awards
  • Ongoing response to the pandemic
  • Climbing enrollment.

Printed copies of this report were sent to all our state lawmakers as well as other key Medical Center stakeholders. It is also available online here.

Thank you for all you do to make UMMC the innovative health science center that it is today. I am proud and grateful to lead the Medical Center as we tackle the most pressing health care needs for A Healthier Mississippi.

Signed, Lou Ann Woodward, M.D.
