Never Forget Who You Are

Well - here we go again.  The COVID-19 Delta variant surge is raging through the state and through our hospitals and health system leaving a broad path of destruction.

What are we to do?

As we have done since the beginning of this now too-long journey, we will continue to bring all the resources we have to bear for the citizens of Mississippi.

With a laser focus, we will continue to advance science and knowledge.

We will act responsibly on that knowledge.

We will not be distracted by external noise.

VC_Aug_13_Field_HospitalWe will try to be patient with those who are not yet vaccinated.  We will try to answer their questions and address their concerns.  They are our brothers and sisters and fellow Mississippians.  Vaccination is the way out of this nightmare.  We cannot give up nor let up on our efforts to get folks vaccinated.

We are going to carefully tend to the people around us.  Let's remember to be patient with each other and show kindness.  EVERY one of us is struggling as we forge this path.

We are going to provide the best care we can for every patient we see.  We ARE overwhelmed and the demand for our services has never been more intense.  We cannot let the hugeness of the situation subtract from the focus on the work at hand.

We are going to educate and train our students to the very best of our ability.  They are watching and learning from our actions, attitudes, and behaviors during this – the most challenging time in most of our careers.  Let’s be mindful and purposeful in our actions.

We are going to be gentle and thoughtful in our judgement of ourselves.  You have given of your time and energy and talents and you have been exceptional.  Don't ever think otherwise. #UMMCStrong.

“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow.” This quote, by Mary Anne Radmacher, is one of my favorites.

Let’s be calm. Be purposeful. Be kind. Be focused. Demonstrate courage. We are going to do our best today and try again tomorrow.

Thank you for all you are doing.  It is important.  It is real.  It is impactful.  You are inspiring.  You are amazing.  Each and every one of you is making a difference.

Signed, Lou Ann Woodward, M.D.
