Two Children’s of Mississippi patients are among the youngest to have participated in clinical trials for two gene therapy options for treatment of sickle cell disease that were approved by the FDA in December. Both teens are enjoying activities that wouldn’t have been easy for them prior to treatment.

Dr. Sam Dickinson’s path toward joining the School of Nursing faculty included a music career and composing for daytime dramas. After earning nursing degrees and working as an RN at UMMC’s bone marrow transplant unit, Dickinson is teaching accelerated nursing students.
