Seriously ill, Ricky Mayers arrived at UMMC in need of life-giving heart and kidney transplants. Now the father of three is doing well and on the road to recovery after successful completion of both surgeries, one of which made the Medical Center the first in the nation to receive an organ through a new delivery system.

The names of seven more movers and shakers grace an expanding honor roll of physicians whose education and/or careers are linked to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. They have excelled in the fields of cardiology, pulmonology, anesthesiology, neurology, hospice care, organ recovery and public health. Their accomplishments have heartened students, patients and anyone who has ever dreamed of achieving a first.

Responding to scenarios of situations that could occur in emergency departments in any hospital is helping UMMC School of Nursing students learn how to de-escalate conflicts and create a safer work place. UMMC Police played roles in the simulations and discussed the situations with students afterward, giving the students feedback on their reactions.

An estimated 10 percent of people infected with COVID-19 continue to have symptoms that persist for weeks, months and even years. Researchers are testing the safety and effectiveness of multiple drugs, medical devices and other therapies to find treatments that bring patients relief.

Even as a child, Austin Toler liked working with his hands: Drawing. Building models. Woodcarving. A career in dentistry wasn’t on his radar until right before college graduation, and it definitely involves working with his hands. And, he’s using his woodworking skills to give patients a better experience.
