When the Medical Center jump-started its liver transplant program in 2013, it began building a robust liver care program that continues to grow. So many firsts followed Karen Battle’s historic surgery, including expansion of the abdominal transplant team and recruitment of transplant infectious diseases and hepatology teams. If not for the state’s only transplant program, Mississippi would have no complex liver care, including cancer treatment.

The associate vice chancellor for research and School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences dean, who also leads three programs, is one of the Medical Center’s most accomplished researchers, having garnered more than $50 million in extramural funding and published 300-plus manuscripts.

From rashes to rare conditions, a software training program allows health care professions students to learn their skills on virtual patients in computer-generated clinics. It is the brainchild of one of the Medical Center’s own.

If not for dental materials, anyone with defects or disease in their teeth might be in a world of hurt. Dr. Jason Griggs has devoted his career to advancing dental health by researching how mixing together separate components can produce user-friendly substances needed for dental care. He’s been recognized by an international association with the highest honor in his field.
