The School of Health Related Professions has named Dr. Cris Bourn as its 2023 Alumnus of the Year and Dr. Cody Pannell as its Early Career Achievement Award winner.
As hosts for Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s Southern Remedy call-in show, Medical Center faculty have shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for their work with a statewide radio audience for years. The latest addition to that roster of wellness experts is a physician who is also, without question, eager and honored to answer the call.
After graduating in 2017 from the Medical Center’s School of Dentistry and completing her residency there, Dr. Alexa Lampkin joined the SOD faculty. Fast forward, and Lampkin has shattered yet another glass ceiling by becoming the first woman dentist to serve on the Mississippi Board of Dental Examiners in its history.
Founded in 2016, the school held its first research day this year with the theme “This is us” to highlight “who we are, what we are doing and can do” and inspire the Medical Center to engage meaningfully in the population health concerns of Mississippians, said Dean Thomas Dobbs.
Walter Makamson battled kidney disease for years – until his sister stepped forward to be a live organ donor, giving him one of her kidneys in an act of love and selflessness. UMMC Grenada, where Makamson gets care following his transplant on the UMMC Jackson campus, on Friday celebrated the gift of life as part of April’s national organ donation tribute.
With six publications, eight travel and presentation awards, and three grants under her belt, and a postdoctoral appointment awaiting her, Jones-Muhammad is already thinking about the next step. She wants to train the next generation of neuroscientists “to be brave enough to learn something new and still be themselves.”
Medical Center faculty and staff often are recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for their academic or medical achievements. These accolades place UMMC among health science centers worldwide.
