You’re a former NFL player living in Mississippi, and injuries you suffered decades ago on the field might still be making life miserable. Or, you are injury-free, but other chronic conditions can be life-threatening. And, it could be that because you feel fine, you’re not getting regular checkups like you should. The National Football League Players Association, the Living Heart Foundation and UMMC’s University Heart partnered Saturday to offer those athletes an array of health evaluations to give them good information on what areas of their health need attention.

Uninsured and underinsured women received free screenings for breast, cervical and oral cancers, and same-day results, thanks to an ongoing collaboration between the College of American Pathologists Foundation and several UMMC departments.

Since opening five years ago, UMMC Dermatology-Louisville has moved up and out – upward in numbers of patients and outward to a new, larger location. Its influence now reaches well beyond Winston County, not only in the practice of rural medicine, but also in the realm of education as the site of the only dermatology training program of its kind.

A newly approved heart valve can be placed through a catheter-based procedure instead of open-heart surgery, giving patients at the Children’s Heart Center at Children’s of Mississippi a less-invasive treatment option with a shorter recovery.
