It has been an eventful summer of enrichment for young learners in Mississippi, thanks to several Medical Center outreach programs. The latest, Mosaic, concentrated on high school students from the state’s rural areas, where the need for improved access to care is profound.

As COVID-19’s Omicron BA.5 variant continues to sweep the state and country, everyone is in danger of infection, regardless of whether you’ve had the virus already, or had vaccines and boosters. It’s that contagious, UMMC infectious diseases experts say. That means taking precautions is the best way to avoid getting sick.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience sponsored through UMMC’s School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences gives undergraduate college students rich experiences in laboratories, pairing them with mentor researchers for 10 weeks. It’s an opportunity for them to learn new skills, gain confidence and figure out: Is research for me?
