Celebrating a sixth record-breaking year in philanthropy, Sanderson Farms Championship host Century Club Charities presented a $1.3 million donation to Friends of Children’s Hospital during a news conference today. Friends, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Children’s of Mississippi, has pledged $20 million toward UMMC’s seven-story pediatric expansion and is past the halfway point in reaching that goal, said board chair Melanie Morgan.

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea often can’t get a good night’s sleep, and no wonder. They may snore loudly and gasp for breath because their airway is blocked, making them sleepy the next day and sometimes causing cardiovascular problems. A new device implanted by a UMMC physician opens up those patients’ airways, giving some the first solid sleep they’ve had in years.

Getting enough rest, exercising, eating right and achieving a balance between work and play is a tall order for anyone. But for busy millennials, self-care might be even more elusive. Medical Center experts advise this population to be mindful and deliberate about self-care, planning it if they need to, and to not feel guilty about paying attention to their emotional and physical health.
