A surgery goes awry. A family aggressively takes out bad news on a physician. A nurse accidentally gives the wrong medication, and a patient dies or is harmed. Such traumatic events create “second victims” who may feel guilt, helplessness or fear that affects delivery of compassionate care. A new UMMC peer response team is offering them support and a listening ear.

Mother’s milk is best for the newborns in neonatal intensive care units at UMMC and around the state, but many of their mothers aren’t providing them breast milk. A Kellogg Foundation-funded project is trying to change that by identifying and eliminating obstacles to breastfeeding for mothers whose babies require NICU care.

Thousands of drawings by Mississippians will create a one-of-a-kind mosaic mural of the beauty of our state for the lobby of the Children’s of Mississippi hospital expansion. The digital art will include a kiosk, so those who add their artwork to the project will be able to look up their name and see their art’s location. The expansion is on schedule to open in fall 2020.
