A construction beam covered with signatures, gratitude and wishes in a rainbow of Sharpie ink colors rose to the top of the seven-story pediatric addition last Thursday during "Growing Up Together," a topping-out ceremony in what will be the Children's Hospital lobby. The pediatric expansion project is set to open in fall 2020.

At 12:01 this morning, the University of Mississippi Medical Center threw the switch on the first phase of Workday, the institution's shiny new Enterprise Resource Planning system, the much heralded replacement for Lawson. Starting today, the way UMMC employees conduct much of their everyday business has completely changed - from viewing their paychecks to submitting travel reimbursements.

Today marks a change in the path of medical education for UMMC's almost 200 new residents and fellows. It’s a milestone in their presence at clinic visits, surgeries and other medical procedures; except this time around, they are more responsible for patients than in their previous learning phases. After a welcome party and hopefully a little sleep, they’re ready to begin.

The benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and babies will be taught through education modules in all seven of UMMC’s health professions schools thanks to a grant from the Bower Foundation. The modules, featuring real-life scenarios such as clinic visits, will be part of the academic curriculum by fall 2020.
