It was a year of firsts, record-breaking achievements and important collaborations. It was also the year the Medical Center community had to say goodbye to an epic figure in its history: Dr. Blair Batson. Take a look back at 2018 and the many accomplishments and historic events at UMMC.

Dr. Elizabeth Carr, a dental hygiene faculty member since 2006 and a three-time recipient of UMMC’s Norman C. Nelson Order of Teaching Excellence Award, has been named chair of dental hygiene. She will take over for Dr. Beckie Barry, who served as chair for 15 years and is retiring at the end of the year.

UMMC's Department of Emergency Medicine led a national study to test a new treatment for septic shock. The results were published in JAMA Network Open on Dec. 21. The clinical trial is among the first to use an adaptive design, a new strategy endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration.

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.
