Health informatics and information management is an exciting career option for individuals who wish to work in health care, but are not interested in providing direct patient care. This field blends health care information systems with business administration and management. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that health information-related jobs will grow by 20 percent from 2018-26, making it one of today’s most in-demand health care fields.
Employment can be found in a variety of organizations, including hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, health plans, insurance agencies, governmental agencies, educational institutions, vendor organizations and research centers.
About our programs
Bachelor
Two online bachelor programs - traditional and progression - are offered. With the exception of professional practice courses, all courses are delivered online.
The traditional program prepares students to develop information systems for quality patient care, facility reimbursement, medical research, health planning, and health care evaluation, as required by the changing health care environment. The curriculum has 60 required course hours.
The progression program is specifically designed for those already holding a RHIT credential through the American Health Information Management Association. The curriculum has 31 required course hours.
Master
The master's degree program has two tracks - health informatics (HI) and health information management (HIM) - specific to a student's career goal rather than past education or experience.
The HIM track emphasizes management and administration of health care data and information systems. The HI track addresses design and development of information systems, with an emphasis on applied clinical informatics.
Both tracks require 36 total credit hours. The program spans six semesters and can be completed in two years. An additional five hours of electives are required for MHIIM degree with RHIA eligibility.
Certificate
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Health Informatics is comprised of courses offered in the first year of the health informatics track of the Master of Health Informatics & Information Management (MHIIM) program. Courses are offered across three semesters for 10 total program hours.
Certificate graduates may choose to apply to the MHIIM program. Semester credit hours with a grade of "B" or higher are transferable to the MHIIM.
