Student Research

Students, this page was designed with you in mind. Please visit often to check out student research news and opportunities.

The dental school encourages all students to participate in research related to dentistry and consider careers which include academic dental research. Opportunities for students to involve themselves in research include the UPSTART summer research program and the Honors in Research Program. There are no classes scheduled for the summer between the first and second year to allow students to participate in research as early as possible in their professional training. Students who decide to pursue research then have ample to time to find mentors, complete projects and publish research before graduation!

Mentored Student Research Opportunities

Faculty mentors offer opportunities in variety of research areas: from dental materials, to periodontics, to population studies on oral health disparities. Students are encouraged to work with a mentor to develop their own projects or to extend an aspect of a current project. The school supports opportunities for students to achieve recognition for their research through a variety of means, including competing for awards at the annual SOD Research Day, presenting at academic and professional conferences, and co-authoring articles for publication.

UPSTART Research Program

Mentored summer research opportunities in dental or basic science are open to dental, pre-dental, pre-graduate and high school students.

School of Dentistry Intramural Research Grants

The goal of the intramural research support program is to enhance research activities in the School of Dentistry. Grants provide awards of about $3,000 for project supplies. Pre-doctoral students and residents (with faculty mentors) are eligible.

For more information, contact Millicent Bingham in the SOD Office of Research at (601) 984-6010.

Honors in Research Program

The Honors in Research Program (HRP) provides an opportunity for eligible dental students to choose advanced study in dental research or basic health science and receive recognition for their accomplishments at graduation.

School of Dentistry Research Day

Dental students, graduate students, residents and faculty present posters of their findings to the UMMC community and beyond. In addition, students compete for sponsored awards and recognition.
