    Admission criteria

    Students are admitted during the fall, spring and summer semesters; however, for some tracks, course sequences begin only in the fall or summer semester. Applications are available beginning July 1 of the academic year prior to admission. For a complete list of application deadlines, please click here.

    Admission to the post-master's program is based on the evaluation of the following data by the Graduate Admissions and Progression Committee:

    • A BSN from an accredited institution (NLN or CCNE), which included upper division theory and clinical practice courses in nursing; and a master's degree in nursing or related field. (Please note: In the absence of BSN degree, a master's degree is nursing is required.)
    • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;
    • Evidence of current unrestricted licensure (RN) to practice in the United States and eligibility for licensure in the state of Mississippi and/or privilege in a state in which the student will have clinical practice;
    • For Acute Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner applicants only: One year of critical-care experience as a registered nurse is required.
    • Students accepted in the UMMC program must successfully complete a background check prior to final acceptance into the program.
    • Students must complete preadmission counseling prior to official acceptance. Students accepted into the post-MSN program will be contacted for this counseling.

    In unusual instances, the Graduate Admissions and Progression Committee may consider applicants who do not meet the admission criteria. The School of Nursing reserves the right to offer programs based upon the number of acceptable applicants admitted. When a program is not offered due to limited enrollment, the applicant will be notified and other admission options will be explored.

    CPR certification classes are available to students who have been accepted to the UMMC nursing programs. For more information, please click here.
