  • Post-MSN Early-Entry Admission Information

    Admission criteria

    Post-master's DNP early entry is offered to outstanding UMMC and Alcorn State University MSN students through a competitive selection process. Eligible students must have completed an entire semester of coursework in the respective UMMC or ASU MSN track prior to applying.

    Applicants who wish to be considered for early-entry status must meet the following minimum criteria:

    • An acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score; 
    • A minimum overall GPA of 3.2, on a 4.0 scale, through the first semester of full-time study in the MSN program.

    How to apply

    The School of Nursing will send eligible applicants the DNP Early-Entry program application, as well as instructions for completing the application. The deadline for completed applications is posted online each semester.

    • A complete application;
    • Official GRE scores and transcripts from every college attended, submitted to the Office of Student Records and Registrar;
    • Preadmission interview with UMMC DNP faculty;
    • A nonrefundable $25 application fee paid by credit card or by check, made payable to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
    • Letters of reference from three individuals sent directly to the Office of Student Records and Registrar. Letters of reference should address the following:
      • The applicant’s potential to develop, implement and evaluate a program project;
      • The leadership potential of the applicant at a regional, state or national level;
      • The ability of the applicant to communicate in a scholarly manner, both orally and in writing;
      • The ability of the applicant to be self-directed in learning;
      • The length and type of the relationship with the applicant.

    Progression and retention

    To retain status as an early-entry student, the student must meet the following conditions:

    • Maintain continuous enrollment in the UMMC or ASU MSN program; 
    • Maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. Any grade less than a "C" in the MSN program will result in dismissal from the DNP Early-Entry program.

    Matriculation into DNP program

    Upon completion of the MSN program and receiving the Master of Science in Nursing degree, students, who meet the admission criteria for the DNP program and receive approval by the DNP program director, will be admitted directly into the DNP program.

    •  All transcripts become the property of the University of Mississippi Medical Center and cannot be returned to the applicant or forwarded to another school or individual. Transcripts must be sent directly by the school to the Office of Student Records and Registrar.

    • Facsimile documents will not be accepted.
    • Transcripts must be submitted to the Office of Student Records and Registrar at the end of each semester until all prerequisite requirements are completed.
    • Report any name, address or phone number change to the Office of Student Records and Registrar.
    • Do not send application materials to the School of Nursing.
    • All grades, including failing grades and grades on repeat courses, are used to calculate preadmission grade point averages.
    • The applicant is responsible for notifying the Office of Student Records and Registrar of all changes to the plan of study.
    • Out-of-state tuition charges apply for all applicants that live outside the state of Mississippi.
