Medical Students and Surgery

Current students

  • Surgery clerkship rotation information
During your eight-week surgery clerkship, you will spend four weeks on one of our specialties (either General Surgery A, General Surgery ACS or VA Surgery) and four weeks on one of our subspecialties (General Surgery B, Cardiothoracic, Pediatrics, Plastics, Transplant, Trauma, Urology or Vascular). The specialty rotation is assigned by the coordinator, and the subspecialty rotation is assigned as close as possible to the student's personal preferences.
  • Surgical Scholars Program
The Surgical Scholars Program allows students in the summer between the first and second years of medical school gain some early, concentrated, clinical exposure to a specific area of surgery. A student accepted into this program will, in consultation with his/her assigned faculty advisor, develop a plan to optimize the time spent in the program. Student applicants will need to be dedicated to full, active participation in the program and be available to work for the entire time frame with the exception of a few weekends off. Programs in the Divisions of General Surgery (including Trauma/Critical Care), Plastic Surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery) are available. In some situations, some research activity may be part of the experience, depending upon whether or not a mentor is currently involved in research. The Surgical Scholars experience will take place for 8 weeks during the months of June and July between the M1 and M2 years. Twelve students will be chosen to participate through a formal application process that will include an interview. This experience will not carry medical school credit.
