It is my pleasure to welcome you to UMMC and especially to the UMMC vascular surgery fellowship program. While we have been training vascular surgeons since 1974, we were accredited by the ACGME in 2011 under the leadership of Dr. Fred Rushton. If you are interested in applying to our program, click here for more information. The vascular surgery fellowship is a two-year program consisting of opportunities at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Hospital and a local hospital. This gives the trainee a well-rounded operative experience in a variety of settings. The fellowship is divided equally between both basic science and clinical research in addition to clinical responsibilities.I believe that you will find challenging pathology in perhaps the most ill patients that you will encounter. It is our goal to see that our current fellows and recent graduates are equipped to both treat the vascular diseases of these patients and to evaluate and prepare them for definitive management. I encourage cooperation and mutual respect for the faculty on the vascular surgery team as well as all physicians and other health care personnel outside of our division. We are a close-knit group, and I believe that you will always be able to find someone to help you solve any problem that may arise. The goal of vascular surgery is to supply circulation, either venous or arterial, to the various organs and parts of the body. There are many approaches to this end, and I believe that you will have a great time learning the ever-growing list of techniques, as well as the management of vascular diseases. When you successfully complete the vascular surgery fellowship program, you will be eligible to take the qualifying and certifying examinations offered by the American Board of Surgery.
