One of the strengths of our adult psychiatry training program at UMMC is being able to work, teach and care for patients in a world-class medical center. In addition, we have the oldest medical school in the Deep South which affords further academic opportunities for our residents.
As the primary site for our residency training program, UMMC is Mississippi's main teaching hospital. Residents have the opportunity to care for psychiatric patients on two inpatient units: our general psychiatry unit, 7 West, and our medical psychiatry unit, 7 East. Residents also rotate through our consultation liaison service conducting assessments of medical and surgical patients. Residents are exposed to child psychiatry through our child inpatient unit, 3 Circle. The primary outpatient treatment location is the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, located at the Jackson Medical Mall, which is a general outpatient psychiatry clinic.
A broad spectrum of psychiatric disease is seen by these services due to UMMC's strategic location as a major referral center for the Jackson metropolitan area and further Deep South. Being the only academic medical center in the state means that patients are often referred to UMMC when usual treatment has failed, which provides residents with an opportunity to not only see a broad range of psychiatric illness, but also the opportunity to actively treat patients with severe mental illness. Our residents are able to treat a diverse population of patients that is truly representative of the population of the state of Mississippi.
Situated off Woodrow Wilson in Jackson, the VA hospital is an acute care hospital. Here, residents rotate on psychiatry inpatient, neurology, and internal medicine rotations, as well as care for patients in the outpatient setting. The VA has active programs where many of our residents get their substance abuse and addiction experiences. Residents are also able to gain exposure to community services such as telepsychiatry and Mental Health Intensive Case Management, a program which provides case management and psychiatric services in a patient's own home through a traveling team of providers. Rotations through the VA system allow residents to develop an appreciation and understanding of issues unique to the veteran patient population.
Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) is a publicly funded psychiatric treatment facility operated under the direction of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. The hospital is located on a 350-acre campus in Whitfield, 15 miles southeast of Jackson, the state capital. Mississippi State Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission. The facility also includes licensed nursing home beds and provides a variety of community service programs.
On their MSH rotation, residents are able to care for patients in the inpatient setting, where the majority of patients have been committed on an involuntary basis, and typically represent the most acutely ill patients in the state. MSH works closely with the community mental health programs across MS to optimize the continuity of care for psychiatric patients. Residents rotate through the child and adolescent services, furthering their understanding of the challenges unique to child and adolescent psychiatry. Elective experiences that take advantage of the opportunity to work with various patient populations that are cared for at the hospital are a popular component of the PGY-IV year for many of our residents. This is also a major teaching site for our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. MSH has outstanding attending physicians who provide supervision and teaching to our residents
Baptist Medical Center has served Mississippi since 1911. Our residents gain experience in geriatric psychiatry in the Baptist Medical Center's geriatric psychiatry unit, which takes a team-based approach to the treatment of geriatric psychiatry patients.
The Sleep Disorders Center at UMMC provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of persons with suspected sleep disorders and the full range of treatments available to reverse or improve diagnosed sleep disorders. The center has the longest-standing accreditation in Mississippi by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Here, our residents are able to gain an appreciation for the critical role that sleep can play in many psychiatric disorders and the complexities inherent in the diagnosis of sleep disorders.
