Externships in the Department of Otolaryngology are offered from July through January. This four-week clinical rotation is designed for students who are interested in pursuing graduate medical education in otolaryngology. Students work with our faculty in the clinical and didactic setting and actively participate in all aspects of patient care at the intern level. A 15-minute presentation to the department on a topic of his/her choice is required.
Interested students should apply through VSAS. Only senior medical students enrolled in good standing in an LCME- or American Osteopathic Association-accredited school, in the U.S. or Canada, will be offered a senior elective in this School of Medicine. Availability of specific dates is determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
To comply with UMMC and state regulations, accepted visiting students must be fingerprinted on the first day of the rotation. Note there is a $50 fee for this service.
The Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences welcomes visiting students, but does not guarantee an interview invitation to all visiting students. That decision will be made during review of the entire applicant pool in ERAS.
