Residency Program Overview

The otolaryngology department has developed an outstanding reputation for its commitment to teaching residents and medical students and ranks in the top 25 programs nationally in terms of NIH research funding. UMMC is the state's only medical teaching facility and has a large population base with a varied patient mix and state-of-the art equipment, all of which offer excellent training.

Our residents are afforded exceptional training opportunities by departmental faculty who demonstrate daily that they are dedicated to ensuring the best possible education for our residents. Our objectives are to provide each resident with a strong background in basic and clinical sciences related to otolaryngology, to assist the resident in the development of clinical and surgical expertise, and to give the trainee the opportunity to learn and practice research skills. Each year three residents are accepted into our fully accredited five-year training program.

Along with the demanding work of a training program, our residents develop a very strong sense of camaraderie both at work and after hours. This results in friendships lasting way beyond the residency years.
